Peter Nero was an American pianist and pop conductor. He directed the Philly Pops from 1979 to 2013 and earned two Grammy Awards.
Bernard Nierow was born in Brooklyn, New York, and began formal piano instruction at the age of seven. Under Frederick Bried, he pursued piano study. He was accepted into the High School of Music & Art in New York City before the age of 14, and he also received a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music.
His instructor and teacher, Constance Keene, once stated in a Keyboard Classics article that “Vladimir Horowitz was Peter’s greatest fan!” In 1956, he earned his degree from Brooklyn College.
Nero’s debut album, released in July 1957 on the Mode label as Bernie Nerow, demonstrates his technical mastery of the jazz genre. In 1961, Nero released an album and took home the Best New Artist Grammy. He has since recorded 67 albums, won another Grammy, and gotten 10 more nominations.
In eight years, 23 albums were created during Nero’s early partnership with RCA Victor. After switching to Columbia Records, he released the album and song Summer of ’42, which sold one million copies.
From 1979 through 2013, Nero served as the founding music director of Peter Nero and the Philly Pops. Nero led and performed with his jazz trio around Southeast Florida while serving as Pops Music Director of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra from 1990 to 1999.
Albums by Nero featuring symphonic orchestras include On My Own, Classical Connections, and My Way. Together with Mel Torme, Maureen McGovern, Doc Severinsen, and others, he recorded Peter Nero and Friends. The romantic themes of Nero’s most recent albums, More in Love and Love Songs for a Rainy Day, were predominant. Four of his earlier recordings were released again due to great demand. He was a participant in the recording As Time Goes By: The Great American Songbook, Volume II by Rod Stewart.
