Clare Grogan is a Scottish singer, actress, writer, and dancer who is known for being a member of the early 1980s new wave/post-punk band, named Altered Images, alongside Johnny McElhone, Tony McDaid, Michael Anderson, Gerard McNulty, Jim McKinven, Steve Lironi, and David Wilde. The band released several albums and singles which included Happy Birthday, Pinky Blue, Bite, Song Sung Blue, Don’t Talk to Me About Love, Bring Me Closer, Love to Stay, and Change of Heart. After the band split up, Clare Grogan tried to pursue a solo career but things did not work out very well for her and soon she dropped the idea. First Album

As a member of the early 1980s new wave/post-punk band named Altered Images, her debut album, Happy Birthday, was released in September 1981. It consisted of songs such as Love and Kisses, Real Toys, Beckoning Strings, Happy Birthday, Leave Me Alone, and A Days Wait.

The album was ranked at number #26 in the UK Album Chart and its song, Happy Birthday, was ranked at number #2 in the UK in October the same year. The album was also certified ‘Silver’ by the BPI (British Recorded Music Industry) Limited.

First Film

Clare Grogan made her first theatrical film appearance as Susan in the coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama film, Gregory’s Girl, in 1981. The film was first premiered at the London Film Festival in November 1980 and Clare Grogan starred alongside John Gordon Sinclair and Dee Hepburn.

First TV Show

Clare Grogan made her first TV show appearance as Herself in an episode of the music chart television program, Top of the Pops, in October 1981.

She and her 2 sisters went to the same school i.e. Notre Dame Convent School.

Clare Grogan has been a member of the Scottish Youth Theatre.

When she was around 17 years old, several patrons started a fight while she was dancing at the Glasgow College of Technology. Although she tried to get away from the place, she was injured by thrown broken glass and suffered a deep facial wound and was left with a prominent scar on the left side of her face and despite being an incident from the past, her parents could not hear or talk about it even after several years have passed.

She started filming as one of the lead cast members for Gregory’s Girl only after a duration of 3 months after the incident.

Later, in 1998, Clare Grogan got to know that part of the glass was still in the facial tissue while she was working in Theatre at Watford. It had to be treated surgically.

Film director and writer, Bill Forsyth, discovered Clare Grogan at the Spaghetti Factory restaurant in Glasgow, Scotland where she was working as a waitress. This later led to her starring in Gregory’s Girl despite a fair amount of objections from the producers.

In 1984, she was featured in the music video for Young at Heart by the indie rock band, The Bluebells.

Initially, she had to be credited as ‘C.P. Grogan’ because there was already a member of Equity named Claire Grogan, who became a photographer. Hence, she dropped the ‘i’ from her name.

Clare Grogan was cast as Rita in a stage production of the comedy Educating Rita at Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1987.

After Altered Images split up, she tried to pursue a solo career but her single, Love Bomb, which was released in 1987, could not achieve much success and her plans for her album, titled Trash Mad, were eventually dissolved.

In 1989, she founded Universal Love School alongside her bandmate, Steve Lironi.

The song titled True by the new wave band, Spandau Ballet, has been inspired by Clare Grogan.

As a writer, Clare Grogan published her first book, a children’s novel (aimed at age 7 and up) titled Tallulah and the Teenstars, in October 2008.

Her dad was diagnosed with dementia.
