A Coogee house has sold for $9 million, smashing the suburb record and coming out as the top residential sale of 2014 in the south east.
The four-storey, five-bedroom, five-bathroom house at 5 Gordon Ave sold on Christmas Eve and boasts panoramic ocean views of Gordons Bay.
The house was meticulously designed by its owners Danny Simmons of legal firm Clifford Chance and wife Mel along with architect Craig Rosevear and builder Paul Watson. It was built specifically to take advantage of the panoramic ocean views.
“We love minimalism,” Ms Simmons said. “There are special features throughout like TVs that are hidden, walls of storage and a false wall in the kitchen that hides messy appliances.”
The property originally had an auction date of November 29 last year with price expectations over $8.5 million but did not sell. It was later sold via private treaty through Phillips Pantzer Donnelley selling agent Jason Pantzer.

Mr Pantzer said the property was bought by a young couple.
“We had strong interest with over 50 groups inspect during the campaign including several celebrities and overseas buyers,” he said.
“It had stunning ‘never to be built out views’ and was a meticulously designed home. It was a very rare property, there are only a handful that offer this aspect and lifestyle.”
The lower level of the house has a large rumpus or family room that looks out over the view.
A home office opens off of this room and also looks out over the water. It has the potential to be converted into a bedroom.
There is also a bedroom on this level containing a kitchenette and offers the perfect accommodation for a live-in nanny or extended family member.
The entry level of the house is where the main living areas are located. There is an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge room that opens onto an entertainment terrace with balcony.
The kitchen features ample pantry space, an island bench and two separate sinks, one of which can be closed off from the rest of the kitchen. There is also a separate living area towards the entry of the home, which contains a wet bar and a temperature controlled 1200 bottle wine cellar.
On the upper floor are the remaining bedrooms including the main bedroom retreat. There is a walk-in wardrobe in this bedroom and an open-plan ensuite.
Floor-to-ceiling windows allow for an uninterrupted view of the bay and the free standing bath also takes advantage of these sights. The main suite has access to an undercover balcony and it is from here where the best view of Gordons Bay can be experienced.
The other two bedrooms each feature built-in wardrobes and their own ensuites.
Back on the lower level, stairs lead from the rumpus down to the infinity pool which sits beside a concealed kitchen, barbecue area, steam room and bathroom.
Below the pool are landscaped lawns perfect for the children to run free on.
Other features of the home include a large internal laundry, an internal lift, a four-car lockup garage, Spanish limestone floors and terraces throughout and a Sonos music system.
The previous suburb record was $7 million in 2013 at 3A Gordon Ave. The current median house price for Coogee according to CoreLogic RP Data sits at $1.905 million and has seen a 24.9 per cent growth over the past 12 months.
